MOTHER & SON
A Message from the Director, Jasper Kyle
The TV show Mother & Son is an Australian classic that is at its heart a platonic love story driven by conflicting needs and wants of care. Today, this story of role reversal, with the child becoming the carer and the parent bedding to be cared, is played out in hundreds of thousands of homes across the country today as our population ages and many of our parents require more and more support. Salient today still is the narrative about living with Dementia, which is the second leading cause of death is Australia, and for Women the leading cause of death. As no cure has presented itself, we need to be having these discussions on how to live with a loved one who has Dementia and how to take care of them, even when they are uncomfortable and challenging.
I'm very excited to be directing this piece. Not only because of it's iconic status as an Australian comedy, but also because it presents an opportunity to dissect very complex interactions of competing needs. I look forward to looking closely at how those needs are met and the motivations behind wanting to meet those needs, often at the expense of one's own.
Mother & Son is going to end the 2024 season on a real bang, and so far the excitement that has been expressed by our existing audience base has been overwhelmingly exuberant. I can't wait to get going on this production and working with my performers and crew to pull together something which I believe will be truly special and memorable.
There will be a reading of the play on Tuesday 20 August at 7pm at the Theatre at Club Ryde. All are welcome – whether you plan to audition or not.
Audition details: are Monday 2 September at 7pm and Wednesday 4 September at 7pm.
